Spotlight on Giving: With Courage

When McMinnville resident Caitlin Sticka was diagnosed with breast cancer, she faced many trips to Portland for medical care and support services. However, Caitlin's multiple and lengthy trips to Portland soon became daunting. She sought out local resources and discovered that support for breast cancer patients in Yamhill County was very limited . Based on her own experience, Caitlin took the initiative to create a support group in her community. That organization, With Courage, is now providing much needed and greatly appreciated support for women facing cancer in Yamhill County.

With Courage offers many services including:

  • Quarterly meet-ups in a relaxed environment surrounded by women who understand what you are going through

  • Care packages for patients who are actively going through treatment. Included in each care package is: a durable tote, blanket, insulated water bottle, coloring book, colored pencils, thank you cards, stamps, journal, pen, hand sanitizer, lip balm, lotion bar, & port pillow.

  • An on-line support group. This private group is highly monitored by our With Courage administrators ensuring a safe place for women to seek guidance and support.

  • Financial assistance via The Courage Fund.

Spotlight on Giving: American Red Cross

RELIEF IN THE FACE OF EMERGENCY

Since its founding in 1881, the Red Cross has been globally preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. In our region The Cascade Chapter reaches 42 counties and 4.7 million people.  Their work has a profound impact on individuals and families in need.

Did you know that Cascade Chapter volunteers provide urgently needed resources to all displaced families of home fires? Their extraordinary service doesn't stop there.  Last year our local organization:

  • Collected and distributed 182,150 units of blood.

  • Assisted 3,688 individuals impacted by disasters. 

  • Provided housing for 1650 overnight stays.

  • Coordinated the work of 2500 volunteers.

  • Provided emergency communications and liaison support to military families.

  • Conducted CPR and first aid training

The Red Cross life-saving mission is accomplished by mobilizing volunteer's power and donor's generosity.   An average of 90 cents of every dollar the American Red Cross spends is invested in delivering care to those in need.

Spotlight on Giving: Salem Health Foundation

Salem Health Foundation was established in 1968 by Salem citizens interested in supporting Salem Health Hospital and Clinics. Its mission is to provide exemplary health care to the citizens of the Mid-Willamette Valley. The Foundation's 15 volunteer Directors help raise funds and manage the resources of the Foundation while distributing the funds according to the wishes of the donor. Their high impact non-profit activities range from providing direct financial assistance to patients in need, funding of education programs, and the purchase of equipment and supplies.

‌Support of The Salem Health Foundation Has Enabled:

  • Creation of a Community Health Education Center on the hospital campus.

  • Grants to patients needing financial assistance with insurance co-pays.

  • Scholarships to students pursuing medical or medically related careers.

Spotlight on Giving: Family Building Blocks

Founded in Salem in 1997, Family Building Blocks is a certified Relief Nursery whose mission is to keep children safe and families together. They are the only organization of its kind in our community, providing the most intensive, specialized prevention services at no cost to families who are facing overwhelming life circumstances. Family Building Blocks annually assists over 800 families and 1200 children in Marion and Polk Counties.

This special non-profit organization offers a variety of therapeutic early childhood services. In addition to their Certified Relief Nursery, other programs include Healthy Families home visiting services, Early Head Start serving families with children under three, and Family Mental Health Services.

Family Building Blocks Provided Over 9270 Home Visits in 2020!

Resources Making an Impact

Family Building Blocks provides a broad set of resources to kids and their families via community partnership programs. These resources include:

  • A Food Pantry that provides emergency food boxes via partnering with Marion-Polk County Food Share

  • The Clothing Closet offers quality and gently used clothing.

  • Community Referrals where parents are connected with resources such as medical and dental programs, housing assistance, child care, drug abuse counseling and domestic violence programs.

Spotlight on Giving: The Elsinore

Did you know that the Elsinore is named after the City of Elsinore in Shakespeare's Hamlet? Since arising in 1926 on a former livery stable site, the castle-like Elsinore Theater has served our community as a truly unique performing arts center. This architectural and acoustic wonderland houses the largest pipe organ in the Pacific NW and is a registered Historic National Landmark.

Salem's Cultural Center

The Elsinore has hosted events ranging from Cecille B DeMille silent movies, Mickey Mouse Theater, James Earl Jones, and Clark Gable. In recent years the Theater annually welcomes over 100 events including our own Salem Symphony, Dwight Yoakum and George Lopez. Funded by an endowment, the Elsinore manages a variety of programs that provide thousands of young people a positive experience with plays, music, education and more.

A Legacy of Community Support

The Historic Elsinore Theater is a non profit organization whose mission is to "promote, protect and preserve". In 1980, grassroots efforts led by the Save The Elsinore Committee raised funds needed to purchase the Elsinore and save it from from demolition. Massive restorations have followed including a $3.2 million dollar restoration led by the Architect firm Curry Bradshaw. Brett served on the Board during the capital raise and renovation. The Davis Altman Group continues to be a long time donor to the Elsinore, having hosted client events and sponsoring concerts at this historic venue.

Spotlight on Giving Newsletter: The Liberty House

The mission of the Spotlight on Giving Newsletter is to share with you the special work of non-profit service groups in our community.  Today we are spotlighting the Liberty House.

Since 1999, the Liberty House has been offering a safe, comfortable, child friendly environment for children and their families facing concerns of abuse, neglect, trauma or grief.  The Liberty House serves children from birth to 18 years old.  Those services are voluntary and free of cost to the family. 

When a child arrives at the Liberty House they are met by compassionate, professionally trained staff. Medical providers conduct a complete medical exam.  Counselors interview the children and help them talk about what has happened to them in a non-judgmental and sensitive matter.   All services are coordinated with local law and welfare agencies to insure the highest level of support to the child and their families.  

In addition to assessment services, the Liberty House provides follow-up mental health services for the child and caregiver.  Resources and information are available to the family as well as to all members of our community.  

Their motto, Change Hurt into Hope, defines their mission.  The Covid pandemic has unfortunately added to increased instances of child abuse and abandonment.  The timing of Spotlighting the Liberty House is especially important in these times.
